Choosing Happiness

Choosing Happiness

Happiness is a choice. It's a statement we often hear, and dismissing it as a privileged viewpoint is easy. But as someone who has experienced a lifetime of heartache, I can assure you that it's possible to prioritize your happiness, even in the face of adversity.

Growing up in an abusive family, being the victim of domestic violence, and losing my child to her father's hands are just a few of my traumatic experiences. While I wouldn't wish these experiences on anyone, they have taught me a valuable lesson: happiness is not something that happens to you but something you create for yourself.

Choosing happiness isn't a decision you can make overnight. It takes time and effort to identify the things that bring you joy and even more courage to prioritize them. For me, the things that bring me the most happiness are helping others, spending time with family, and caring for myself. I find joy in giving to charity, helping those in need, and sharing my story to inspire others. The sound of my children's laughter, family dinners, and a full night's rest all contribute to my overall happiness.

But prioritizing happiness doesn't mean that we never experience sadness or anger. In a world that is often unfair and unjust, it's natural to feel overwhelmed and frustrated. The systems that oppress marginalized communities and the dehumanization of people are problems that need to be addressed. However, we have the power to choose how we respond to these challenges. We can choose to be a force for good, to stand up against injustice, and to invest in our own happiness and that of others.

In the end, happiness is a choice. It's a choice that requires intentionality and dedication, but it's one that's worth making. Despite the world's challenges, I remain committed to investing in my happiness and spreading joy to others. Life is too short to let heartache and trauma define us. We have the power to choose happiness, and that's a choice that can change everything.

I would love to hear what makes you happy, regardless of how big or small.
